Dear Readers and Friends,

If you are anything like me, you pick a few ‘celebrities’ and try to find out things about them - especially when they have amazing skin! One celebrity I have recently started following is 43 year old January Jones, who played the emotionally distant Betty Draper in the now defunct series “Mad Men”.

January Jones, has somewhat of a cult following online - especially with regards to her interest in skincare. In articles she has stated: "My skincare ritual is pretty high maintenance, but I love it. I make it high-maintenance," she explained to Elle. "I don't get facials, I do them at home, so I love doing exfoliation masks and moisture masks and serums and creams and eye patches. I just love all that stuff."  And in another article with People Magazine she stated: "I'm super religious about taking care good care of my skin.” And all her hard work is paying off!!

Jones is known for spending Saturday evenings doing facials and masks and recording her skincare adventures on instagram. Recently she put out into the interweb stratasphere her winter skincare routine - and skincare enthusiasts went gaga!! Now many of the products that she touts are not green (some are) but the reason I am sharing all of this with you today is that I took some of her ideas and products regarding skin and flipped it and instead used green /organic products to try to get similar results. Like a mad scientist trying to reinterpret skincare for the masses - or something like that. So here goes:

Now my adventures following Jones’s recipes for good skincare started with analyzing her routine. She does a LOT of exfoliation and uses a lot of retinol. And her exfoliation of choice are masks and overnight treatments. Now for my skin I am not one who likes a lot of exfoliation - but I decided to see if I went for a more organic choice of product coupled with less frequency if I could get similar results.

So let me first put up what Jones uses on her face:

Morning: In the morning, Jones's uses an eye cream, three serums (though it's most likely she alternates and these three are her current favorites), and locks them in with a moisturizer. The serums are iS Clinical's Super Serum Advance, a vitamin C serum packed with actives, Allies Of Skin's 20% Vitamin C Brighten + Firm Serum, and deMamiel's First Fix Stress Response Serum. She uses Shani Darden's just-launched Intensive Eye Renewal Cream with Firming Peptides, and seals it all in with Tata Harper's luxe Crème Riche Anti-Aging Peptide Night Cream.

Cleansing: Like any good skin care routine, Jones' starts with cleansing and toning — she uses Tata Harper's Nourishing Oil Cleanser, and mists with Drunk Elephant's latest launch, Sweet Biome Fermented Sake Spray. Her mask of choice: True Botanicals's Resurfacing Moisture Mask, an exfoliating and hydrating formula packed with lactic acid.

Evening: Finally, at night, Jones reaches for iS Clinical's Active SerumAllies of Skin Bright Future Sleeping FacialShani Darden Retinol ReformMay Lindstrom's The Blue Cocoon Beauty Balm ConcentrateSisley Paris Supremÿa At Night serum and Cream. Again, yes, this is quite extensive. But one look at Jones' s naturally glowing skin and it's clear the proof is in the pudding.

Now I will say that there are a few organic products in the mix in Jones’s routine. Since I am happy with a number of my choices I decided to concentrate on her exfoliating routine and did a exfoliation/alpha hydroxy/retinol swap. Also Jones’s price point is a lot different from mine - but I am thinking this is a long-term investment in my overall appearance and health in the world….(ok blah, blah, blah - Let’s call it what it is:I want to look pretty!!)

So my first night of exfoliating was as follows:

At night I like to do the following: I use my cleanser as both a makeup remover and oil massager for the skin. Lately I have been using Laurel Effortless Cleanser Radiant Glow and then following up with a second cleanse with True Botanicals Nourishing Cleanser . I really love the smell of these two products, and the Laurel Cleanser leaves my skin so lovely and soft!! Then I swapped Allies of Skin Bright Future Sleeping Facial for Lilfox Couture Dewy Bean Dream, which is listed as a smoothing bedtime mask with a gentle retinol alternative . This is an overnight alpha hydroxy treatment with a retinol alternative that when I awaken leaves my skin super soft and super smooth! I love this stuff. Afterwards I follow the ‘treatment’ with a face serum Ere Perez Nectar Blue Cypress Face Nectar. Love the Ere Perez!!! It hydrates your skin leaving it glow and dewy. And glides on leaving a cooling feeling on the skin. Then Jones puts on her skin May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon (an organic product). I use Mahalo Care The Rare Indigo Beauty Balm…..similar to the Blue Cocoon, the Mahalo balm has blue tansy and it wraps your skin in rich goodness. I love this stuff and keep going back to it over and over again. This balm is specifically formulated for calming inflamed skin such as: eczema, rosacea and dermatitis - so I think this a really smart choice after doing a treatment on your skin such as a smoothing retinol mask. I kinda ended my switcheroo there - though Jones puts on another cream and serum - but I felt done.

So that was the first night.

Then the following Night I decided to mask.

On my mask night I turned to Living Libations Best Skin Ever in Seabuckthorn - a staple in my beauty arsenal - to cleanse my face. Since this is an oil cleanser I felt it mimicked the Tata Harper one that Jones uses. I followed up with something I am really loving at the moment True Botanicals Nutrient Mist an antioxidant spray that leaves your skin calm and hydrated. Then, like January I used the True Botanicals, Resurfacing Moisture Mask. This is a mask that gives results - you only need to leave it on for 5 minutes - tops! And you will see a visible improvement immediately to your skin. If you want to exfoliate with a mask - this is it. I even saw the lines on my forehead diminish after use. After taking the mask off (3 minutes was my threshold) I followed up with Ere Perez Face Nectar, True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil and then went on Earth Harbor’s Nymph Nectar, another lovely balm to give deeper hydration and balance to my skin. This is a beautiful product that I was recently introduced to by a dear friend. It contains sea fruits and super berries and can be used as a sleeping balm over night on the skin to rehydrate. And then I stopped and went to bed.

The next night I let my skin rest and the night after that went back to the Lilfox Dewy Bean Dream.

So overall my impressions were this: you get amazing results with these type of products. There was a noticeable difference in the texture and the look of my skin: plumper, less lines and an overall more hydrated look. I also don’t think this is too difficult a regimen to follow either, however for me there are two things: I would definitely let my skin rest between ‘treatment’ days, and not do more than 3 treatments a week. I know that January does more, but she knows her skin, and I know mine.
