Dear Friends & Readers;

I love following people from my youth who are on a smilier aging path to my own - time-wise that is. One such person is 90’s super model Christy Turlington Burns. You may remember her for her work as a spokes model for Calvin Klein Eternity perfume from 1989-2014. At 52, she is showing a number of us, what aging gracefully is all about…please keep reading to find out more about her skincare routine, and her tips for aging beautifully both inside and out..

Christy was born in Walnut Creek California, to a pilot from Pan Am, and a flight attendant mother from El Salvador. She was discovered while riding a horse on a beach in Florida while her father was working as a training captain for Pan Am there. At 18 she moved to NYC to become a model and the rest is history. Of course I remember her for her work as a model for Calvin Klein, but I loved her in George Michael’s moody video for “Freedom 90!” with a number of other super models at the time and tea kettle that wouldn’t stop blowing!

But Christy is more than just another pretty face. She went back to school at NYU graduating cum laude with a bachelors degree in comparative religion and Eastern Philosophy and later went on to get a masters degree in public health from Columbia University. During this time she met and married film maker Ken Burns, had a couple of kids, and formed her organization: Every Mother Counts a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. She is also a documentarian and serves on the Harvard Medical School Global Health Council.

With all those things going on in her life no wonder that her skin and body care routine are quite minimal and streamlined with a focus more on feeling good rather than looking good.

Diet: Though she’s not a vegetarian, Christy says she has always eaten well, focusing mainly on fresh fruit and vegetables as well as white fish for nutrition: “I tend to be more of a vegetarian than a carnivore. When I was younger I got into yoga seriously and gave up meat, but when I fell pregnant I had cravings for protein, so I listened to my body–in the way yoga teaches you–and started to eat meat from time to time,” she admits. As for favourite foods, avocado, sweet potatoes and tahini are what she most craves – elux magazine.

Beauty Routine: Online it is kinda hard to find a lot of info regarding a beauty routine where Turlington Burns is concerned…one thing that keeps coming up is sleep, sleep and water “Those are two of the most basic things that you really want to take advantage of. You can't really store up sleep, but I really feel the difference when I don't have it. So I try to do everything I can to ensure that I have that quality of sleep to really rest and rejuvenate.” - Self.com In fact in a number of articles Turlington Burns seems to focus on discussing her before bed ritual of walking her dogs and how dark rooms should be to get the optimal level of sleep. Online she has mentioned that she uses Biotherm as a product on her skin.

Exercise: “I love to hike. I love to walk. No matter what season, I just like to be outside. In this pandemic, when we were first out on Long Island, it was still pretty cold and not great outside, but it still felt so good because I knew we wouldn't have been able to be outdoors here in the city. To have that ability just to walk out the door, even if it was just to breathe, made a huge difference.” - Self.com. And as stated in Vogue she still loves doing yoga 3 times a week and runs too!

Scent and Makeup: In everyday life most days Turlington Burns doesn’t wear makeup, but uses scent as a mood enhancer when she can…she also loves massage and taking baths with scented epsom salts. When she does reach for makeup she prefers a minimalist 90’s look. And states that when she was modeling for Calvin Klein they used no makeup for many of the photo shoots..

Maybe the secret to aging well, is focusing on causes you believe in, and helping others. And dancing to George Michael :)
