Old School Skincare
Part 1 - Dr. Hauschka
This is the first part of a two part review on European natural skincare. In this post I will be writing about an old school brand that many of you are familiar with: Dr. Hauschka. Rudolf Hauschka began his life in Vienna and after serving in WWI Dr. Hauschka began studying in Germany with Rudolf Steiner an Anthoposophic Doctor of Medicine. Anthroposophical medicine has its basis in the occult and some of Dr Steiner’s own spiritual beliefs. It also uses animal matter, minerals and plants to make medicines to treat the body in combination with massage and counseling. Dr. Hauschka learned to make these medicines without using alcohol as a preservative.
The demand for his preparations encouraged Dr. Hauschka to establish his company in 1935 and open subsidiaries in both London and Vienna.. Following a ban by the Nazi Party and the imprisonment of Dr. Hauschka and his future wife Dr. Margarethe Stavenhagen, the company relocated several times before finally settling in Bad Boll/Eckwälden in 1950, where its offices, gardens and farms are still today.
“When we developed these unconventional skin care products we naturally felt like rebels.”Elisabeth Sigmund
For years, Dr. Hauschka considered launching a natural skin care range to complement his medicines, however, his ideas only became a reality in the early 1960s when he met Elisabeth Sigmund, a Swedish aesthetician who had been formulating her own skincare products. At Dr. Hauschka’s invitation, Elisabeth Sigmund travelled to Eckwälden from her home in Stockholm to work with Dr. Hauschka to develop facial care products that supported skin health as a means of achieving beautiful skin. They jointly created solutions for stable cream bases without chemical and/or synthetic emulsifiers and scented with natural essential oils. The first products were launched in 1967.
I use a number of their products such a lipsticks, concealers and foundation. Today I would like to review 3 products that I use the most often:
Volume Mascara retail: $38.00 This mascara comes in black, brown and plum. I have been searching for a volumizing mascara since having to leave my Dior Show mascara behind and this is the first mascara in the organic/natural world that has given me great results. I have the black - but since I am pretty fair - next time I will get the brown for a more natural look.
Blush Duo retail: $38.00: I wear 03 Sunkissed Nectarine almost daily. This gives me just a healthy swipe of color on the apples of my cheeks. In the description of the product it sasy to use the brownish color as a contouring powder - I use it more like a bronzer to add a bit of color to my temples and some times on my nose and eyelids - a great every day color that always looks natural and healthy.
Soothing Cleansing Milk retail: $39.00 The cleansing milk has always been a bit of a mystery to me until I finally started using it for what it was made for: removing makeup! On those days when I want just a super creamy, moisturizing product that is different from my ‘oil regime’ - I reach for this. This product is super hydrating and gets the job done.
If you haven’t already tried Dr. Hauschka while on your organic skincare journey - give it a go - millions swear by it - and it really works!!
