The Double Cleanse

We continue discussing the cleaning of the face in the next few blog posts!

Recently I have been reading about the new Korean Skincare method called the: double-cleanse…have you heard about it?

Here is a blurb I found online:

What is the double cleanse method?

The double cleanse is the cleansing method Korean women use for clear skin. It involves washing your face in two steps, first by using an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser. The first step draws out oil-based impurities such as sebum, SPF, and pollutants while the second step cleanses water-based debris such as sweat and dirt (Unfortunately cleansing tissues won't do the job well!) I watch a lot of YouTube videos in the evenings - (time-wasting/guilty pleasure) - on skincare and this method has recently come up with a lot with skincare bloggers and beauty editors. I wonder if it is because now we are so accustomed to all the many steps of skincare: cleanser/toner/serum/moisturizer/sunscreen etc. - that we have been conditioned to feel that multiple steps = clean skin?

I have been playing a bit with this method. First using my oil, then a cleanser for mature skin i.e.gentle and then a serum , and lastly an oil or balm as a final step. Some of the guides suggest as your ‘second cleanse’ a water-based cleanser to further remove bacteria and dead skin cells - but I ‘tweak’ my regime by using a gentle cleanser (not necessarily water-based) but one that is made for mature skin. But since I don’t wear a lot of makeup during the day, just my RMS Beauty ‘un-coverup’ most days I am wondering if I need this extra step in my skincare regime. Also, I am wondering if this is just more hype to get us to add another product into our cleansing process…. Some people might say, “ No I am good, with my oil cleanser - and I don’t need another product.” But do we?

I can see both sides of the coin. Some of us long for the ‘squeaky, clean feel’ days we had when we were teenagers trying to get rid of acne and a lot of teenage makeup. Others don’t mind adding more to their skincare regime feeling that more equals youthful, firm skin. While some people feel like a few steps are fine, but more than that is either too much for their skin OR too much for their pocket book, OR too much time wasted on something they are not that overly concerned about in their lives.

I think it is easy to be sucked down the preverbal beauty ‘rabbit-hole’ and always feeling like you need to be in on the newest and best(est) beauty product and ritual - but are we spending just to spend; and is it really better?

I think for me I will use the double cleanse method on days where I wear a full face of makeup: foundation, concealer, eye makeup, blush and lipstick…to help get my face a bit cleaner than oil alone, but for most days I will stick with my oil cleanse routine and continue on with my regular steps of washing the days impurities away.

Please let me know your thoughts on this new Korean Beauty Trend…..

Happy Washing!
